How much time do you spend in airports every year? There are a few things you can do to keep that figure down, from packing intelligently to becoming familiar with airport layouts. But for the true road warriors, enrolling in the expedited clearance and screening programs, known as Global Entry and TSA Pre✓, is the best way to spend less time in airports, avoid lines, and eliminate what most consider the most stressful aspect of travel.

The TSA Pre✓program, currently available as a pilot program for Delta and American Airlines passengers at 15 U.S. airports, entitles pre-approved travelers to a quick security walk-through. In exchange for some additional information upfront, trusted travelers may use a designated screening lane and remain fully dressed, freeing up TSA agents to focus on higher-risk individuals and situations.

For the frequent international traveler, it’s worth looking into the Global Entry Program, a pre-screening program from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. For a one-time fee of $100, a brief interview with a customs officer, and a background check, approved travelers can bypass the lines in customs, scanning their passport and fingerprints at a kiosk instead.

Neither of these programs automatically exempts travelers to additional screening; anyone may be selected for further examination at the discretion of TSA or Customs agents. But the programs mark a move towards a more intelligent screening process—and a less stressful airport experience for frequent business travelers.
