Both the men’s and women’s USA Olympic basketball teams will be hosted by Silversea Cruises’ Silver Cloud during the Rio Olympics. The Olympic Family will reside on the Norwegian Cruise Lines’ Getaway ship located next to the Silver Cloud. Since the 1992 Olympics, the men’s Olympic team has not stayed in the Olympic Village and chooses to stay in other accommodations. Craig Miller, a spokesman for USA Basketball stated the reason why, “We don’t stay in the village because we don’t feel it’s the best way to prepare for competition. The players have a long professional season and they want to spend as much time as possible with family and friends.” The last time the teams stayed on a cruise ship was for the 2004 Athens Olympics on the Queen Mary 2.
