The Miami-Dade County Commission recently announced a collaboration with Royal Caribbean Cruises to build a $24 million cruise terminal at the Port of Miami. The port is currently the largest in the world, measuring in at 170,000 square feet. Set to open late in 2018, the new terminal promises to be an innovative addition and landmark in Miami.
CUTTING-EDGE DESIGN
Five architect firms competed for the opportunity to build the port; the top firm was awarded the contract for its cutting-edge and avant-garde designs. The new port has already been nicknamed “The Crown of Miami,” due to the design’s distinct and unique shape. The terminal’s structure was designed so that depending on your viewing angle, a different symbol will be displayed. When approaching from the east or west, the port’s lights will be viewed as a ‘M’ for Miami; whereas, when approaching from the terminal side, the port will look like waves are rising and ships are passing. No matter which direction the port is looked at, the terminal’s façade will make a remarkable impression thanks to bright lights and an extremely unique construction.
