Marriott International’s acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts has officially been completed, and steps are now being taken to merge these two industry heavyweights, creating the world’s largest hotel company.
In welcoming Starwood Hotels & Resorts to its portfolio, Marriott International now directly operates, or franchises, upwards of 5,700 properties worldwide, totaling over one million rooms. Marriott now offers travelers options ranging from moderately priced options to luxury resorts. The company’s reach now extends to 100 countries. The acquisition also increases the Marriott’s footprint in the convention and resort sectors.
Starwood’s offerings, when combined with existing Marriott options, will bring Marriott’s portfolio to 30 brands. Marriott has combined its three loyalty programs (The Ritz-Carlton Rewards, Marriot Rewards, and Starwood Preferred Guest Rewards), enabling members to utilize their points and status at any of Marriott’s 30 brands. While the merging of Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) with Marriott Rewards is not due to be completed until 2018, members can currently receive a status match and transfer points across all three programs.
