PHILANTHROPIC CRUISE LINES

Cruise ships enable us to explore the globe, and as passengers, we are reminded on a daily basis how interconnected the world actually is. It’s this daily reminder that has inspired a number of major cruise lines to be involved in a variety of charitable causes. Read on for some exciting opportunities to give back while on your next cruise and some great examples of generous corporations.

Crystal
In 2011, Crystal Cruises introduced their “You Care, We Care” voluntourism campaign as part of their Shore Excursion Programs. These volunteer programs were developed to provide guests and crew the ability to get involved in worthwhile causes in the destinations they visit while at sea. All of the transportation and arrangements are organized by the cruise line and are often free for guests and crew. Opportunities included assisting with poverty relief, education, workplace training, cultural preservation, environmental conservation, animal welfare, building/repairing homes, renovating local schools and community centers, and helping communities improve in general.

Celebrity
Celebrity Cruises has a long history of participating in philanthropic activities, including Save the Waves, The Ocean Fund, and World Wildlife Fund. Their latest philanthropic event, “An Evening Under the Michelin Stars,” took place in September in Miami. The event was hosted by Michelin star chef Cornelius Gallagher, and 100% of the proceeds benefited the Children’s Cancer Care Center (CCCC). The CCCC is a non-profit organization whose mission is to help families of children who suffer from cancer/chronic blood disorders. The proceeds will allow the organization to continue their financial and education support for children with life threating illnesses. The evening consisted of a decadent menu which included crafted cocktails, canapes, and a six-course dinner. Guests were able to experience a full scale musical performance by Broken Strings, while a live auction took place to raise funds and awareness of the CCCC.

Fathom
Carnival launched its Fathom brand last year for those more interested in giving something back to the countries they visit. Cruises are designed around the social impact travel market by allowing passengers to choose from fixing up homes, working with disabled residents, and helping a women’s arts and crafts co-op create a business plan. Travelers can also choose to spend a day with a local family to learn firsthand about their life.

RCCL
Royal Caribbean has several programs that encourage community growth and volunteering, as well as enabling employees to give back and guests to participate in charitable giving. The cruise line launched its own Save the Waves program, created an Ocean Fund, and encourages volunteerism throughout the organization through their “Get Involved Volunteer Everywhere” (G.I.V.E.) employee program.

Princess
Established in 2009, the Princess Cruises Community Foundation provides financial and in-kind support to various non-profit organizations. The foundation’s mission is to enrich the lives of people through education, the preservation of natural and historical landmarks, disaster relief, and supporting the local health and welfare efforts of global communities.
