5 Unique Winter Activities to Try This Season

SNOWGA IN WASHINGTON

Just three hours east of Seattle, in the heart of Washington’s Cascade Mountains, Lake Chelan is a spectacular waterfront destination. The region is known as a summer hotspot with its gleaming waters and breathtaking mountains; however, in the winter, it turns into a snow-filled wonderland. In January, visitors can attend Yogachelan, which offers a unique retreat called Snowga. The activity combines snowshoeing and yoga in two and a half hour excursions through vineyards on the Echo Ridge Trail. Along the way, participants stop to do yoga poses in the snow with a view of stunning Lake Chelan.

ICE CLIMBING IN COLORADO

The town of Ouray is one of the dreamiest Rocky Mountain towns in Colorado. The mountains extend right down into the village, which is home to a soothing hot springs resort and a unique winter sport: ice climbing. Head to the Ouray Ice Park and try climbing the face of a frozen waterfall! Not surprising, it’s the first of its kind in the world. The ice park is free, open to the public, and draws climbers from around the world. Newcomers are urged to take an introductory lesson and there are a number of different course options. There’s no need to bring your own gear, as it’s included in San Juan Mountain Guides rates.

ICE BIKING IN NEW YORK

Ice biking first debuted in Buffalo’s redeveloped waterfront last December, and now it’s a huge hit. Ice bikes are outfitted with a stainless steel frame with blades, allowing cyclists to seamlessly glide along the ice in a 33,000 square foot rink at Canalside. The sport is entirely homegrown, as the bikes are produced at a Buffalo-based company and are believed to be the first of their kind for pubic rental in the US.

AIRBOARDING IN PENNSYLVANIA

The Endless Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania are an ideal destination for unique winter adventure, such as airboarding. The sport involves taking an exhilarating ride atop a lightweight inflatable sled. Similar to body boarding in the ocean, airboarding requires no previous experience and is easy to pick up. As riders surge down the mountain, they can reach up to 60 mph! Don’t let that fact fear you though!  Airboards are designed for optimal maneuverability with underside grooves that allow for sharp turns and quick stops. It’s a great alternative to traditional skiing or snowboarding and is ideal for thrill-seekers.

SNOWSHOE TO DINNER IN IDAHO

This winter, why not partake in a winter culinary adventure like no other in McCall, Idaho. Visitors can snowshoe or cross country ski to a BYOB gourmet dining experience in a yurt! This unforgettable dining experience takes place in Idaho’s scenic Ponderosa State Park. Patrons pack adult beverages of choice, strap on snowshoes or skis and then journey one mile under the stars to a warm, cozy yurt. Their efforts are greeted with warm apple cider or mulled wine that can be enjoyed on the shores of Payette Lake.
