Airlines are covering all their bases this year. While we have previously reported on the new premium economy cabin coming to American and Delta flights this year, in an effort to remain competitive and thwart low cost rivals, American and United will also begin offering passengers “basic economy” fares in 2017. Delta has had a basic fare program in place since 2012.
While the specifics for all three programs differ slightly, the idea is the same across the board: cheap airfare in exchange for little to no amenities. Travelers in the new category will not be able to change tickets, select seats until after check-in or upgrade seats. Travelers will also have to pay for checked bags, and on United, free carry-on luggage is also prohibited. While unpopular with passengers, the basic economy trend has proved profitable for airlines over the past few years.
