New York’s JFK might be getting a much needed facelift in the coming years. Last month, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo unveiled a $9 billion vision for a complete renovation and upgrade to the city’s largest airport. According to Cuomo’s proposal, JFK’s six terminals would be connected via an expansion of the existing terminals, and improvements would be made to dining, shopping, and meeting facilities. The proposal also includes a plan to replace the roughly 30 miles of twisted roads that currently surround the facility with a new ring road that offers direct access to both terminals and centralized parking areas.
Enhanced security measurements throughout the airport and an expansion of JFK’s taxiways are also suggested. Lastly, the plan calls for improvements to the city’s AirTrain and connectivity to NYC’s subway system. Unfortunately, the proposal does not yet have a timeline, and The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees operations at JFK, will require a private investment. According to reports, JFK served 60 million travelers last year and is expected to serve 75 million travelers by 2030.
