Dutch carrier KLM has been at the forefront of travel technology over the years. The airline was the first to all travelers the opportunity to check-in and get real-time updates via Facebook Messenger. They also introduced Spencer, a robot that helps travelers find their gate. Now, they have recently begun testing a new biometric boarding technology at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport (AMS). Designed by Vision Box, the system uses facial recognition software to allow travelers to go through the gate without having to show any documents.
Travelers first need to scan their passport and boarding pass and having their photo taken at a designated kiosk. When it’s time for boarding, travelers can then proceed through the biometric eGate without having to reproduce any travel documents. The test is scheduled for three months at one KLM gate. If tests go well and travelers are satisfied with the new procedure, it could be expanded throughout the entire airport.
