Conde Nast Traveler recently ranked airlines according to which offer the most legroom in Economy. It seems the industry standard has become 30 inches of legroom or pitch as it is also referred to. In the United States, JetBlue (33 inches), Alaska Airlines (32 inches), and Southwest (32 inches) ranked as the top three – offering an extra 2-3 inches of space in comparison to most other airlines. The big three — American, Delta and United — all offer an average of 31 inches of legroom.

Earlier this year, American announced plans to cut legroom on their Boeing 737 Max jets to 29 inches. After a bout of customer outrage, plans were quickly reversed and a compromise was reached for 30 inches of legroom on the new aircraft. Budget airlines, Frontier and Spirit, offer only 28 inches of space between seats, and without the ability to recline on Spirit, passengers are sure to feel squished during their flight.

Foreign airlines, on the other hand, typically go above and beyond the American average, with AeroMexico offering a full 34 inches! South African Airways is a close second, providing passengers 33.5 inches of leg space. Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar, known for their luxury product, offer a generous 32 inches of space to Coach passengers.
